Oranienburg on the Havel

Installation of a 432 m long DN 500 pipe section using the controlled horizontal directional drilling technique at Oranienburg on the Havel

Crossing the pipeline underneath a canal, while at the same time protecting the adjoining nature preservation areas, was the challenge for the planners and contractors when installing a new DN 500 supply pipe.

The canal and bank areas necessitated a culvert with a total length of 435 m. It was therefore decided to complete this section with the aid of the controlled horizontal directional drilling technique.

It was the first time that such a distance was to be covered with DN 500 pipes using this technique.

72 pipes with the restrained positive-locking TYTON®-BLS® socket connection were assembled to make up the overall length.

The pipe was then drawn in within three hours with a required tractive force of a maximum of 443 kN. The pressure test discovered no problems at all, and the construction time was less than one week.
