Leipzig-Halle Airport

Extension of the Leipzig-Halle Airport with a total of 13,700 m of ductile cast iron pipes to DIN EN 545

Due to the continually increasing volume of air traffic, it became a matter of urgency to extend the Leipzig-Halle Airport. The existing airport operating areas had to be increased by constructing an extension to the north of the A 14 Dresden-Halle motorway. The new system of the take-off and landing runway extends over an area of around 2,000 x 4,000 m.

Pipe outer protection

Cement mortar coating to DIN 30 674, Part 2. With this protection type, the excavated earth could be used for back-filling, making the usual sand bedding unnecessary.
Thanks to the reuse of the excavated earth, substantial cost savings could be made by not having to remove and dump the excavated earth or bring in sand for the bedding.

Applications of the cast iron pipes supplied

  • Fire-fighting water supply throughout the whole area of the northern extension
  • East and west aircraft de-icing systems
  • Fire service building on the north side of the area (sanitation and fire-fighting water)
